D10S – What it Takes to Win
While reading John Poulson’s report on the D10 Championship regatta it became apparent that personal modesty or maybe journalistic integrity caused him to leave out an important aspect of his story, specifically the nearly clinical precision with which he and Team Longshot sailed to victory in the regatta.
Observed from the racecourse, USA 2917 displayed all of the factors that are inherent in a successful campaign, good basic tactics, clean boat handling and maneuvering, and pure speed. I think there is a lesson in all of this for all of us.
If you look closely at USA2917 at any regatta, several things will become apparent. First thing you will notice is that the boat and gear is immaculate, John spends a significant amount of time, sweat, and OH yes, money to provide his team with the best equipment available, minimizing even the thought of equipment failure or doubt as to the boat’s potential performance.
Second you will realize that the key crew on the boat all look familiar. Team Longshot, like all of us, has seen some personnel changes over the years, but manages to retain key performers and assimilate substitutions to the crew very thoroughly. All of that pretty equipment is useless without a well coordinated and skillful crew.
Finally is the fact that if you decided to check up on my previous statements you need only attend any J/24 event in the District or major events farther afield, there is the highest chance that you will see them there. There is no substitute for time on the water racing, at any level.
This is just a bare bones commentary on some things that I feel should be looked at by every owner in our District and beyond who wants to raise their game. Perhaps, as it does me, it will motivate you to delve a little deeper in to the basic essentials of building and maintaining a successful and rewarding racing program, and just maybe give some insight into the question – Why didn’t we do better in that race?
